01

The record

Know what exists and where the working copy lives.

  • There is a GEDCOM, spreadsheet, family book, paper genealogy or organised collection to begin with.
  • The current record has a recognised keeper or steward.
  • An independent copy exists somewhere other than the steward’s main computer.
02

The family

Make thoughtful decisions about access and responsibility.

  • At least one other relative is willing to help review the archive.
  • The initial viewers, contributors and stewards can be identified.
  • Living relatives’ details will stay inside an agreed private space.
03

The reason to act

Name a real preservation need and a useful moment to begin.

  • The present keeper will not be the archive’s only long-term plan.
  • Something has been lost, duplicated, disputed or made difficult to find.
  • A birthday, reunion, handover or other family moment provides a useful deadline.
